A time when people still travelled on horseback, when sails guided ships, and when Provence already echoed with the song of cicadas.
That year, a small hamlet nestled between the hills and the Mediterranean made a historic decision:
Until then, Saint-Cyr was just a hamlet under the authority of its neighbour, La Cadière d’Azur.
But the population of Saint-Cyr was growing. Life was organising itself around the church, the port, and the cultivated land.
Little by little, the locals felt the need to govern themselves, to make decisions without relying on a village perched several kilometres away.
And let’s not forget — the 19th century brought big changes: the Revolution had passed, Napoleon too, and France was restructuring.
All over the country, small communities were seeking administrative independence.
Saint-Cyr joined the movement.
➡️ Saint-Cyr was officially recognised as a commune.
The name “Saint-Cyr” comes from Saint Quiricus (Cyr), a young Christian martyr to whom the village church was dedicated.
But as time passed, a distinction was needed — there were several Saint-Cyrs in France!
So they added the town’s pride: the sea.
In 1904, the name officially became Saint-Cyr-sur-Mer.
From a small farming hamlet, Saint-Cyr-sur-Mer has become a beloved seaside town — nestled between vineyards and coves, blending tradition with gentle living.
But it has never forgotten its roots.
Every street, every neighbourhood, every stone still tells a piece of the 200-year journey lived between land and sea.
So in 2025, we’re not just celebrating a round number.
We’re honouring a bold decision — that of a village choosing its own destiny.
We’re paying tribute to those who, generation after generation, shaped this corner of Provence.
And above all, we’re reminded that history isn’t just written in books — it’s also found in glances exchanged at the market, waves brushing the shore, and laughter shared on warm summer nights.
If I’m telling you this story today, it’s also because Saint-Cyr-sur-Mer is part of our daily life: it sits exactly between La Cadière d’Azur, where our first holiday rental Mas Caipi is located (that name alone is a story — I’ll tell you about it another time!), and La Ciotat, where we welcome guests from around the world every summer in our Ô de Mer apartments.
